1. Introduction

SocialMode ("SocialMode", "the app", "we", "us" or "our") is designed to help users use social media more intentionally. The app provides an Instagram web wrapper, local time tracking, daily limits, attention alerts, opening friction, focus features, grayscale mode, progress screens and a feedback/reporting flow.

This Privacy Policy explains how SocialMode handles information when you use the Android application. Our privacy approach is simple: SocialMode is designed to track your own app usage habits, not your Instagram content.

We do not sell your personal data, we do not show third-party ads, and we do not use your Instagram posts, messages, searches, followers, reels, stories, captions, comments or password for tracking, profiling or advertising.

This Privacy Policy applies to the SocialMode Android app. It does not apply to Instagram, Meta or any third-party service that you access through the app.

2. SocialMode and Instagram

SocialMode is not Instagram. SocialMode is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or officially connected to Instagram or Meta Platforms, Inc.

When you use Instagram inside SocialMode, you are still using Instagram's web service. Instagram and Meta may collect, process and store information according to their own privacy policy, terms and account settings. SocialMode does not control Instagram's data practices.

SocialMode does not use the Instagram API. SocialMode does not request your Instagram password. SocialMode does not receive your Instagram login credentials. SocialMode does not store or transmit your Instagram private content to our servers.

3. Summary of our data practices

SocialMode processes three broad categories of information: local app data stored on your device; optional issue reports, suggestions or feedback submitted by you; and local Instagram web session data handled by Android WebView and Instagram Web.

Local app data includes daily limit settings, time spent inside the Instagram wrapper, focus sessions, app preferences and progress history. Optional reports may include your written description, selected issue type, optional email address and optional limited technical information if you choose to include it.

Instagram web session data, such as cookies and local web storage, may be used by Instagram Web to keep you logged in. SocialMode does not manually read, store, sell or transmit your Instagram cookies, password or tokens to our backend.

4. Data stored locally on your device

SocialMode stores certain information locally on your device so that the app can function properly, using Android local storage such as SharedPreferences and WebView storage.

Local usage and progress data may include:

  • Time spent inside the Instagram wrapper, daily usage limit and today's usage time
  • Usage history by day and weekly progress summaries
  • Baseline daily Instagram usage estimate entered during onboarding
  • Social Mode / Essential Mode usage time
  • Focus session history, completed focus session duration, focus activity categories, number of completed sessions, custom activities and active focus session state
  • Progress and onboarding status

Local app settings may include:

  • App language, theme mode, accent color
  • Daily limit settings, attention alert settings, interval and frequency
  • Opening friction settings, grace period and friction duration
  • Whether "ask reason before opening" is enabled, and optional last opening reason if enabled
  • Grayscale mode setting, focus mode settings, Social Mode / Essential Mode settings
  • Floating button position and whether onboarding has been completed

This local data is used to show your progress, enforce limits, display reminders, calculate summaries, remember your preferences and help you use social media more intentionally.

5. Optional opening reasons

If you enable the feature that asks why you are opening Instagram, SocialMode may store the latest reason locally on your device. This feature is intended to help you pause and use Instagram more intentionally. You should not enter passwords, private Instagram messages, confidential information or sensitive personal information in this field.

6. Data sent to our backend when you submit feedback

SocialMode includes a feedback, report issue and suggestion feature. When you submit a report, suggestion or feedback, SocialMode may send information to our backend provider, Supabase. This may include:

  • The issue type selected by you
  • The written description of the issue, suggestion or feedback
  • An optional email address if you provide it
  • Whether you chose to include limited technical information

The description field is free text. Please do not include Instagram passwords, Instagram messages, private conversations, usernames, cookies, tokens, private content, financial information, health information, government ID numbers or other sensitive information.

7. Optional limited technical information in reports

If you keep the "include technical information" option enabled, SocialMode may also send limited technical information to help debug problems. This may include app version, app build number, platform, Android version, device manufacturer and model, current SocialMode screen and the general Instagram area where the issue happened, such as Home, Reels, Search, Stories, Messages, Profile or Unknown.

Although we do not request your name or Instagram username in technical reports, this information could in some cases be used to identify a device or narrow down a user. This information is used to understand bugs, fix compatibility issues and improve the app. The app is designed to send only a general Instagram area, not the exact private Instagram content you were viewing.

8. What is not sent in reports

SocialMode's report flow is designed not to send: Instagram passwords, Instagram cookies, Instagram tokens, Instagram private messages, Instagram posts, Instagram photos or videos, Instagram captions or comments, Instagram search queries, Instagram followers or following lists, screenshots, raw Instagram page content, raw Instagram URLs containing personal identifiers, direct message contents, usernames typed inside Instagram or your full Instagram browsing history.

The app may classify the general Instagram area where an issue occurred, but it does not store exact private Instagram content.

9. Instagram WebView session, cookies and local web data

SocialMode opens Instagram through an Android WebView. To allow Instagram Web to work properly, Android WebView and Instagram may store cookies, cache files, session information or local web storage on your device. This is similar to using Instagram in a mobile browser. These cookies and web data are used by Instagram to keep your session working, remember login state and load Instagram content.

SocialMode does not manually collect, read, sell or transmit your Instagram cookies, passwords or tokens to our backend. SocialMode provides a reset Instagram session option. Using this option clears the local Instagram web session from the app. After resetting the session, you may need to log in to Instagram again.

10. Data we do not collect

SocialMode does not intentionally collect or store on our backend your Instagram password, login credentials, messages, direct message content, posts, photos, videos, stories, reels, captions, comments, searches, followers or following list, account analytics, contacts, precise location, phone number, camera or microphone data, payment information, government identification numbers, health data, biometric data, advertising ID for ad targeting, data for third-party advertising or data for sale to data brokers.

SocialMode does not contain third-party ads and does not use your data for advertising.

11. How we use information

We use local app data to track time spent inside the Instagram wrapper, enforce daily usage limits, show attention alerts, enable Social Mode / Essential Mode, support Focus Mode, show progress and weekly summaries, remember app settings and help you use social media more intentionally.

We use feedback and report data to understand bugs, fix broken wrapper behavior, improve restrictions, respond to you if you provided an email address, improve app stability and usability, prioritize product improvements and investigate abuse or spam in the reporting system.

We do not use feedback reports for advertising.

12. Legal basis for processing

Where applicable, we process information under the following bases:

  • Performance of the service: local tracking, limits and settings are needed to provide SocialMode's core functionality.
  • Legitimate interests: limited technical information and issue reports help us maintain, secure and improve the app.
  • Consent or user action: optional feedback, optional email and optional technical information are submitted by you through an intentional action.
  • Legal compliance: where we may need to retain or disclose limited information if required by law, regulation or a valid legal request.

13. Sharing of information

SocialMode does not sell your personal data. We may use service providers only when necessary to provide or improve the app.

We use Supabase as a backend provider for storing issue reports, suggestions and feedback submitted through the app. Supabase acts as a data processor on our behalf. We rely on Supabase's data processing terms and security controls. Supabase processes only the information included in your report: issue type, description, optional email address and optional limited technical information.

The app is distributed through Google Play. Google may process information related to app installation, updates, crash signals, Play Protect and Google Play services according to Google's own policies.

When you use Instagram inside SocialMode, Instagram and Meta may process your Instagram activity according to their own privacy policy and terms. SocialMode does not control Meta's processing.

14. Android backup and device transfer

Depending on your Android settings and the app configuration, some local SocialMode app data may be included in Android backup or device transfer features. Local data that may be included in Android backup includes app settings, usage history, focus session history, daily limits and progress data. Instagram WebView session data (cookies, cache) is typically stored separately and may or may not be included in Android backup depending on the device and Android version.

This does not mean that SocialMode is sending this data to our own backend. Android backup and device transfer are handled by Android/Google according to your device settings. If you do not want Android to back up app data, you can review your Android backup settings on your device.

15. Data retention

Local SocialMode data remains on your device until you delete it inside SocialMode, uninstall the app, clear app data from Android settings, reset the relevant feature or Android removes it.

Instagram web session data remains locally in Android WebView until you reset the Instagram session from SocialMode, clear app data from Android settings, uninstall the app, or Android WebView or Instagram clears or changes the session.

Issue reports, suggestions and feedback submitted to our backend are retained for a maximum of 24 months from the date of submission, or until the issue is resolved and the data is no longer needed, whichever comes first. We may retain anonymized statistical information for longer periods.

16. Data deletion and user controls

SocialMode provides controls to delete local SocialMode data, export local SocialMode data and reset the local Instagram web session.

Deleting local SocialMode data resets SocialMode settings, usage history, progress, onboarding and custom activities on your device. It does not delete your Instagram account and does not delete data held by Instagram or Meta.

Exporting local SocialMode data creates a JSON file with SocialMode settings, usage history, baseline and activities. The export is designed not to include Instagram content, Instagram messages, Instagram usernames, Instagram cookies or Instagram passwords. You are responsible for storing or sharing exported files safely.

If you submitted a report, suggestion or feedback and want it deleted, contact us at socialmode.help@outlook.com and include enough information to identify the report, such as approximate date, issue type and email address used, if any.

17. Your rights

Depending on your country or region, you may have privacy rights such as the right to request access to personal data we hold about you, request correction of inaccurate information, request deletion of personal data, object to certain processing, request restriction of processing, request a copy of your data, withdraw consent where processing is based on consent, or lodge a complaint with a data protection authority.

To exercise these rights, contact us at socialmode.help@outlook.com. Because SocialMode does not require a user account, we may need enough information to verify and locate your request.

If you are located in the European Economic Area, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the data protection supervisory authority in your country of residence. In Spain, this is the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (AEPD), available at www.aepd.es.

18. Security

We take reasonable steps to protect information handled by SocialMode. These steps may include keeping most SocialMode data local on your device, limiting backend collection to feedback and reporting data, avoiding collection of Instagram passwords or private Instagram content, sanitizing and limiting report text fields, limiting optional technical data to debugging information, using backend access controls, applying rate limiting to report submissions to prevent abuse, avoiding advertising trackers and unnecessary permissions, and providing local deletion and session reset options.

Our backend provider may automatically generate server logs that include the date and time of submissions and general request information. These logs are used for security and debugging purposes only.

No app, device or internet transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure. You should avoid submitting sensitive information through feedback forms.

19. App permissions

SocialMode requires internet access because it opens Instagram Web inside the app and may send issue reports or suggestions to the backend.

SocialMode does not request and does not use access to your contacts, camera, microphone, precise location, SMS or files for its core functionality. If future versions request additional permissions, this Privacy Policy will be updated to explain why.

20. Children

SocialMode is intended for users aged 13 or older, consistent with Instagram's own minimum age requirements. Users under the applicable minimum age in their country should not use this app or submit feedback forms.

In the European Union, we do not knowingly process personal data of users under 16 years of age without verifiable parental consent.

We do not knowingly collect personal data from children below the applicable minimum age. If you believe a child has submitted personal information through the feedback form, contact us at socialmode.help@outlook.com and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

21. No ads and no sale of personal data

SocialMode does not show third-party ads. SocialMode does not sell personal data. SocialMode does not share personal data with data brokers. SocialMode does not use your information for cross-app advertising tracking.

22. No automated decision-making or profiling

SocialMode may calculate local usage summaries, such as time spent in the Instagram wrapper or progress compared with a baseline. These calculations are used to show you your own progress and help enforce your own settings.

SocialMode does not use this information for advertising profiles, credit decisions, employment decisions, insurance decisions or other legally significant automated decisions.

23. International processing

If you submit feedback, suggestions or issue reports, that information may be processed by Supabase on servers located in the United States or other countries.

Where we transfer personal data outside the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we aim to rely on appropriate transfer mechanisms such as Standard Contractual Clauses or the adequacy decisions applicable to the relevant country. For details of Supabase's data transfer practices, see Supabase's privacy documentation at supabase.com/privacy.

24. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect new features, changes in data practices, changes in backend providers, legal or regulatory requirements, Google Play policy requirements, security improvements or product improvements.

The updated version will be posted with a new Last updated date. If changes are significant, we may provide additional notice inside the app or through the app listing.
